In keeping with the aims of this series, I have endeavored to present a critical-analytical study of the works of Wolfram von Eschenbach, along with a discussion of relevant aspects of the authors life and times. Although I have undertaken to discuss important points of scholarly controversy in the text, I have, at the same time, relegated many of the details on such matters to the footnotes. I believe that this is also in keeping with the aims of the series. I am especially indebted to the book on Wolfram von Eschenbach written by Joachim Bumke for the Metzlar Verlag series, as well as to Bumke's books on "Willehalm" and on Wolfram scholarship since 1945. I have tried to acknowledge my considerable debt to other scholars in the notes that accompany this volume.
