Biography of Clifford D. Simak. ABOUT ROBERT J. EWALD ROBERT J. EWALD is Professor Emeritus of English from a small Midwestern college, the University of Findlay, in Findlay, Ohio. He has been reading science fiction since he was ten years old, which makes him a fan of over sixty-five years. For part of his life, Ewald programmed computers for various businesses until he embarked on a second career as an English teacher. Ewald has published numerous book reviews, and was a recent contributor to the Tymn and Ash¬ley encyclopedia of science fiction, fantasy, and weird fic¬tion magazines. This is his first published book. CLIFFORD D. SIMAK Born in 1904, Clifford D. Simak sold his first science fiction story in 1930, and was soon publishing widely in the pulp magazines. He also pursued a separate career as a journal¬ist and writer on science and other popular topics. He gained widespread fame in the SF world with the first of his series of “City” stories, published in Astounding Science Fiction in 1944; these were collected together in the book of the same title, which has remained almost continuously in print ever since. Simak was best known for his pastoral and humanitarian themes, as exemplied in his Hugo Award- winning novel, Way Station (1963). In later years he wrote both fantasy and SF stories and novels, winning many addi¬tional accolades for his work. He died in 1988. Robert J. Ewald provides the first extended look at Simak’s writing, from his earliest pulp stories to the sophistical fiction of his later years.
