The Fifth International Conference on Theoretical and Computational Acoustics (ICTCA) was held on May 21-25. 2001 at the Friendship Hotel in Beijing. China. This conference was a continuation of the Fourth ICTCA held in May, 1999, in Trieste. Italy. The conference was sponsored jointly by the U.S. Naval Undersea Warfare Center (NUWC), the U.S. Office of Naval Research (ONR), the Institute of Acoustics. Chinese Academy of Sciences, the U.S. Naval Research Laboratory (NRL), the NATO SACLANT Undersea Research Center, the Scripps Institute of Oceanography, the Osservatorio Geofisico Sperimentale di Trieste (OGS) Italy. University of Cambridge UK. Yale University. Harvard University, Columbia University, National Taiwan University, University of Petrol Beijing, Bureau of International Cooperation, CAS. China. National Natural Science Foundation of China. Acoustical Society of China, and the Environment Technology Laboraiory/NOAA.The objective of this conference was two-fold: First, it was held to provide a forum for active researchers to discuss state-of-the-art developments and results and their recent contributions in theoretical and computational acoustics and related areas. Second, the conference provided a means to congregate from different branches of science related to acoustics to exchange new ideas and to stimulate new research for the future. Over hundred scholars, scientists, and engineers from 18 countries - representing 64 universities and laboratories - participated in this event. The presented lectures examined various topics on acoustics and related areas ranging from ocean acoustics to scismo-acoustics, aeroacoustics. structural acoustics, and ultrasonics. Particularly, we have two special sessions : one in memorial of Professor David G. Crighton. and one in memorial of Dr. Warren Dcnner.
