В этой книге полный текст всех аудиозаписей, упражнения к ним, рекомендации для учителя и для тех, кто использует аудио и книгу для самообучения.
Themes for Listening and Speaking contains a wide range of lively
material for advanced listening and speaking practice. It is particularly
suitable as preparation for the Cambridge Certificate of Proficiency in
English examination, Papers 4 and 5, and can be used in conjunction
with an exam course book. It can also be used on its own as a listening
and speaking course for non-exam students.
The book is accompanied by a cassette and each unit is based on an
authentic recording. The material in each unit falls into three sections.
The Listening section contains imaginative comprehension exercises
and is followed by Practice, in which the student manipulates the
structures and functions just heard. Finally, there is a. Speaking section
which provides a variety of communicative activities based around the
unit’s theme.
The themes range from an anecdote by a Hollywood actor to a guided
tour around a costume museum. There is an extensive contents grid
which makes it possible to locate at a glance the theme, mode, number
of speakers, accent and practice available in each unit. The Teacher’s
Edition contains teaching notes, an answer key, transcripts of the
recorded material, and language and vocabulary notes. The book has
also been designed for students to use for self-study.
Notes for self-study students:
It will be useful to read the Notes for the teacher
above, but bear in mind that a different approach is
needed.
What should I do before listening?
Read the task carefully, and check any vocabulary
that is unfamiliar. Make sure you understand what
you need to listen for in order to complete the
task.
Should I listen straight through the recording
without stopping?
Yes, but you may need to train yourself to do this.
When you first start using the book, or when you
find a unit particularly demanding, play a section
at a time, and replay it.
How do I use the language notes and the
tapescript?
If you cannot complete the task, read the language
notes, and try again. If you are still stuck, read
through the tapescript as a reading exercise and
look up in the language items list any vocabulary
you feel is crucial to understanding. Then listen
again. If you are still having problems, follow the
tapescript as you listen. Then try to complete the
task.
How do I use the Answer key?
To check your answers when you feel you have
done as much as you can. If your answer is wrong,
look at the relevant part of the tapescript, and/or
listen again.
Can I use the Practice section?
Yes. Follow the instructions, and check your
answers in the Answer key.
How can I use the Speaking section?
Some tasks, such as reading aloud and giving
instructions, can be done even if you are working
alone. In this case, it would be useful to record
yourself and listen critically to what you have
done. Other tasks clearly demand a partner.
Perhaps you could find someone else who is also
studying on his/her own.
Can I use this material for Proficiency exam
practice?
Yes. The recordings and exercise types will prepare
you for the kind of activities you will be tested on
in the exam. Remember that in Paper 4 each
recording will be played through twice. Good luck!
