Continuity and better product quality have been the reasons for the development of processes for making copper wire. Most of the new methods are suitable for very high outputs only and cannot be installed by small producers. This article describes a process where oxygen-free copper wire rod is cast vertically upwards through a number of individual graphite dies. Based on the experience gained by Outokumpu Oy of Finland, the method is flexible enough to be used on a wide capacity range starting from very moderate outputs.
