The aim of this work is to demonstrate the possibility of describing
the meaning of narrative text with the help of the conceptual apparatus,
methods of study and, most importantly, the factual knowledge which modern
linguistics now possesses. Linguistics has made great advances in recent
years in describing the semantics of linguistic units, both lexical and
morpho-syntactic. At the same time, however, the main context for examining
the unit of language was the individual sentence or, at best, the individual
utterance. The present work aims at applying these results to description
of the semantics of linguistic units in a text, namely, in a text of fictional
narrative. We shall deal, in the first instance, with aspects of textual
semantics which are connected with Bakhtin’s polyphony and Vinogradov’s
image of the author.
