This monograph was originally written as part of a comprehensive study of the historical organization of Irish learning and literature, but on reflection it seemed that it would be more useful if published separately from the larger work. Its core is the text of the two Middle Irish catalogues of tales which Thurneysen designated as lists A and B and its substance the further description and analysis of their content and structure. At present these lists can only be consulted in manuscript or in printed sources which in some instances are not easily accessible, and it was felt that it would be a convenience for students of early Irish literature if they were made available with commentary in a separate volume.
