With a contribution from Andrew Rogerson. Illustrations by Margaret Mathews, and photographs by Derek A. Edwards. This is the first of two volumes describing the results of the Fenland Survey in Norfolk. The introduction describes the geography and geology of the area, historical background, the modern landscape and the sources used for the survey. Parish essays present the results of fieldwork in the 15 parishes of Marshland and the 7 parishes of the Nar Valley. Each essay traces the evolution of the landscape, accompanied by parish maps for each period. The concluding discussion looks at the development of settlement, related to environmental changes, within each of the areas as a whole. Particularly notable has been the contribution of much new evidence towards a reconstruction of the origins and development of the medieval landscape of Marshland.
