WHAT is Anglo-Norman? The name indicates that Anglo-Norman is the speech carried into England by the Normans and there so modified as to need a new name to distinguish it from Norman spoken on the continent. We must not suppose, however, that we have to do with an idiom which, brought over by the Norman colony, transplanted on new soil, so to speak, underwent a regular course of gradual growth followed by gradual decay ; such was not the case.
The one great distinguishing characteristic of Anglo-Norman is its irregularity.
