Clarendon Press, 1974. — 128 p.
This book contains a selective study of the eddy, or Foucault, currents induced
in magnetic and nonmagnetic conducting materials by time-dependent magnetic
fields. Although a number of specialist papers have been written on topics
ranging from the nondestructive testing of metal components to the losses in
rotating electrical machines, there is little logical development of the subject in
textbooks on electromagnetism. An engineer faced with low efficiency or high
temperature rise in an item of equipment, or seeking to put eddy currents to
good use, may feel a lack of groundwork in the subject and need a bridge to the
specialist papers in his field of interest. Quite likely he will have to do the
development work himself. For him and the final-year undergraduate or
graduate specialist in electromagnetism, this volume attempts to explain the
behaviour of eddy currents and outline some of the mathematical techniques of
analysis. Considerable attention is given to numerical methods because it is
only by such means that some problems, in particular those involving steel with
a nonlinear magnetization characteristic, can be solved successfully.
The reader will be assumed to be familiar with the basic ideas of vector
analysis and to have covered the content of a first course in electromagnetism.
