There would seem to be no greater gulf between realist and liberal theories of international relations than in their respective views of the proper role of morality in foreign policy. In fact, morality has traditionally been a defining characteristic. Realists earn their label by emphasizing consequences over moral principles and necessity over choice. Liberals begin with opposite premises, emphasizing duty over consequences and moral imperatives over expediency.
