This volume represents the outcome of the last 30 years of research in the study of Roman Britain. Todd has brought together 16 articles, all by prominent scholars, that focus on the conquest or its aftermath during the first three centuries A.C. A main purpose, in the editor's words, is to discredit the often repeated notion that 'knowledge of Britannia is substantially complete and that mere in-filling is required to round off the edifice.' Not only is that purpose solidly fulfilled in this volume, but different methodologies are also stressed. Intuitive deduction is shown to be a formidable partner to area survey, aerial photography, or laboratory analysis.
