Schwebeablaut, a submechanism of normal Indo-European ablaut in that it is supposed to show alternation in the position of the full grade vowel in the string of consonants, has a long and prestigious history. Although there have been individual studies dealing with individual subgroups that have placed well-justified doubts on the mechanism in these particular areas (e.g., Schmitt, Schütz), an overall survey has been wanting, in spite of occasional pleas for a thorough investigation of the matter, especially after 1935. This has been all the more serious, because most Indo-European handbooks are based on the mechanism.
