The idea of writing this book came while I was engaged in the operation of iron blast furnace and sinter plant. The behaviour of the blast furnace has always appeared to the operators as an enigma. The production of iron and the maintenance of its quality have depended greatly upon the experience and skill of the operators. It is only in the last two or three decades that the art of iron-making has changed to a science. This change prompted me to collect all relevant information emanating from laboratory and industrial research and operational experience and collate them in a comprehensive yet concise monograph for an easy understanding of the complicated processes occurring in the blast furnace and also for use as a text and reference by the under-graduate and graduate students, re-searchers and teachers in the fields of metallurgical and chemical engineering as well as by blast furnace managers, supervisors, researchers and operators and steel plant executives.
