One of the primary objectives of this book is to catalogue historical views of early Penang in the collection of the Penang Museum and of other institutions and private owners. This book is being published under the auspices of the Penang Museum and an exhibition on the historic views is to be concommittantly presented under the sponsorship of the Penang Festival in August 1986, co-inciding with the bi-centenary of the establishment of Prince of Wales Island under the East India Company. Over 160 works will be shown in the exhibition mainly from British or European sources, including original oil paintings, watercolours, aquatints, engravings, and full-size photographic reproductions of items not available in their original form. Some of the engravings are illustrated plates from well-known early books. Illustrated with 166 plates in colour and black and white, insribed on the front endpaper by the author for Lord Richardson, 236pp, oblong quarto.
