The papers published in this volume were written in honor of Professor Lee M. Hollander. Focusing on Old Norse literature and mythology, they illustrate the various facets of his creative activity in the fields in which he has made his major contributions. But Dr. Hollander is also an indefatigable translator of Scandinavian and German literature. Therefore, the first essay in the series covers the broader subject of the techniques and problems of translation from the Scandinavian. Five of the papers contained in this volume were first presented orally at the Sixth Germanic Languages Symposium held at The University of Texas at Austin on November 30 and December 1 and 2,1964.
