This book is intended for use in the final year of technology programs
which offer a course in microwaves. lt is also hoped that it will prove useful
to technical personnel working in the field of microwaves.
In order to provide a comprehensive text at the technology level,
emphasis is given to applications rather than theory. Sufficient theoretical
background is included where this appears to be helpful, but the mathematics
required are limited to algebra and trigonometry. The book also
covers the principles of operation , and constructional features of a wide
range of microwave hardware.
I am much indebted to the many companies and organizations who
provided the detailed information necessary in a book of this kind. Although
the sources are acknowledged in the text , [ would like to thank in
particular the following companies for providing a great deal of additional
technical information , photographs , and figures for use in the book: The
Hewlett Packard Company; N.V. Philips' Gloeilampenfabrieken ; Marconi
Instruments. Also the following professional institutions which kindly gave
permission for use of material from their publications: The Institute of
Electrical and Electronic Engineers (IEEE); The Institution of Electrical
Engineers (IEE); and The Institution of Electronic & Radio Engineers
(IERE).
