The diversity of topics investigated in this volume is a reflection of the range of subject matter, perspectives, and geographic foci that typifies the recently revitalized field of medieval archaeology. At this point in the growth of the field, I believe it is more important to provide the reader with examples of this diversity, than to limit the chapters to a single theme. Because of that decision this volume attempts to stimulate interest and indicate potentially profitable directions of study, rather than to answer a specific set of questions about the past.
