Interrelations of ancient societies and civilizations with their environments attract now attention of not only archeologists and historians, but also of ecologists, engineers, specialists in economics and management, i.e. of many representatives of the broad community of scientists, engaged in environmental studies. Considerable contribution to the developments of problems of interrelation of ancient societies and natures is also made by geographers. At the Fifth Symposium of the IGU Commission on Environmental problems, which took place in October 1981, in Mexico, nearly half of all the papers were devoted to this theme. Taking into account the importance of the discussed problems, and their special role in many Latin American countries, participants to the Symposium recommended its organizers to publish such papers to the Symposium recommended its organizers to publish such papers as a first step. And these are the papers which compose the contents of the present issue of Proceedings of the Commission. Contents of the book can be subdivided into two groups of papers. The first one includes the papers, which illustrate the global aspects of the problem, and methodological problems as well as situations characteristics of the Old World countries. These are papers by I.P. Gerasimov, A. Kostrowicki, A.A. Velichko, A. Ghosh, and others. The second groups is composed by papers depicting the between Pre-Hispanic societies and the environment in Latin American countries (C.A. Monteiro, R. Lopez Recéndez, C. Park, A. Bassols, etc). These papers illustrate specific roles of native populations and ancient (Pre—hispanic) societies with their economies adapted to specific environments.
