The book is a compilation of the proceedings of the conference of the same title held in May 1995 in Zürich, Switzerland, supplemented by a few other relevant articles on the issue. The authors of the articles are well known environmentalists, indigenous and non-indigenous scholars and activists like Pedro Garcia Hierro, Prasert Trakansuphakon, Darell A. Posey, Jeffrey A. McNeely, Sona Jharia Minz, Andrew Gray, Euclides Peña Ismare, Marcus Colchester, and others. The book is divided into five parts. The first gives a general introduction to the issue. The second deals with the interlinkags between "Land Rights, Self-Determination and Resource Use", discussed with reference to cases from Australia, Bougainville, Nigeria, Guyana and Surinam, and the Chittagong Hill Tracts in Bangladesh. The third part presents different approaches to and aspects of the issue of the relationship between "Biodiversity Conservation and Indigenous Peoples". Here we find both general discussions of the issue as well as case studies from Thailand, Kenya, and the Pacific coast of Colombia. The questions of identity, equity and cooperation are dealt with in the fourth part on "Indigenous Culture and Development". Part five deals on the one hand with indigenous rights and international conventions and declarations, on the other hand it presents initiatives towards improving European states' development assistance policies on indigenous peoples.
