This book documents the history of education policymaking in India from 1947 to 2016. It provides a nuanced understanding of policy developments from the inception of the Indian Education Commission (1882) to developments in the field of education during the British era, and consequently the
post-independence period. The book is particularly aimed at covering most major developments post 1980s and placing them in the context of existing political, economic, and social developments. It focuses on the systemic changes brought about in the education system as a part of the interconnected
global trends of expanding democratisation, rise of private education, globalisation, and the birth of the knowledge economy. A comprehensive study of the organisation of education in our country, this book brings together the role of the state, private actors, central and state governments in
furthering educational policy objectives. The book thus develops new insights into the processes and politics of policymaking within the shifting policy environment in India.
