To all the students and teachers with whom I have learned, my deepest thanks for sharing your frustrations over the disconnect between writing and grammar. Your candid dissatisfaction with grammar textbooks and workbooks as well as my own experiences have inspired me to search for
alternative methods of teaching grammar and punctuation. My reading/writing workshop students have provided me with feedback as I developed mini-lessons and pointed to areas of grammar, such as diagramming sentences and memorizing linking verbs, that did not affect their writing. Together, we searched for strategies and ideas that enabled them to recognize their rewrite choices and revise well.
