New documents particularly from ancient Khotan, but also Persian, Parthian and Sogdian. older by more than a thousend years than the 19th century Ossetic and Pamir dialects, have brought clarity to some linguistic problems pf vocabulary North Iranian and Caucasian. These documents concern Central Asian of Taklamakan kingdoms before the Turks had penetrated there and had given their name to Turkestan. On the west the documents belong to the Pontic area of linguistic history before the Iranian-speaking Alans were weakend and withdrew partly into the mountains of Caucasus.
Two cases will illustrate this increased knowledge. The Pamir word karasta- coat of skins is now known in Khotan Saka karasa- and Tumšuq Saka kalasta-. For the west the Khotan Saka word nāma-tsuta- come to a name, hence famous corresponds in origin and meaning to Ossetic nom-dzud.
