The idea of this book is to bring together some international experience in hard rock mechanics and soft rock mechanics and to integrate it with own experience for the benefit of students through a lucid and readable text and to satisfy intellectual curiosity of the authors. A vast amount of published and unpublished research work has been collated, culled, sifted and synthesized to form the core material for this text which could help in developing an insight in rock mechanics, both theory and practice. The material that finally appears in this text has been honed in our undergraduate and postgraduate classes. The focus has essentially been on practical application of theory to extend the armory of designers. It is hoped that the text should make significant contribution to the state-of-the-art practice providing guidance to the neophytes into the challenges of design for engineered rock structures. If the book could fill a general need by making accessible to students techniques that kindled the excitement, imagination and involvement of the present authors in this area, they will be more than delighted.
