This book is the result of a conference held at University College, Cork, in May 1995. It was a UCC150 event and was dedicated to the scholarship of the late Professor M. J. O’Kelly; its organisers were assisted by members of the Student Archaeological Society under the Auditor, Marion Dowd. The conference was a success and it was decided to publish its proceedings. Most of the speakers contributed papers to the volume and several other scholars agreed to contribute to it as well. We hope that the intention of this book - to prompt debate on issues relating to Early Medieval studies, with particular reference to Munster - will be fulfilled.
