The Weatherly Guide to Drawing Animals is a very useful book for anyone learning to draw animals. It's filled with lively examples and short concise tips on approaches to drawing animals.
This book emphasizes and teaches solid drawing principles, which in this case are action, construction and anatomy. In more detail, Joe Weatherly covers gesture drawing, capturing expressions, animal structure (muscle groups and skeletons examples provided!) and form. Also included is a list of animals with note on how what to look out for specifically, for example the differences between cattle, carnivores and herbivores, etc.
The plenty of lively and dynamic animal sketches provided just goes to show the many possibilities and ways to put life into animals.
It's interesting to note that these principles taught here are similar to those you learn for human figure drawing, just applied to animal drawing. Goes to show that good art principles are pretty much universal and can be applied easily to other subjects.
This book represents years of experience and knowledge on animal drawings. Highly recommended.
