This thesis (in Portuguese) addresses the way popular newspaper Ultima Hora, established in 1951 by Samuel Wainer to support Getulio Vargas's pro-labour agenda, led a structural change in the Brazilian press in the 1950s and 1960s. After 1971, Wainer was led to sell his newspaper to growing media holding Folha in Sao Paulo and to shady investors in Rio, and UH came down a slow spiral of death until it was forced to shut down in 1991.
