In the last 40 years we have seen intensive efforts in the development of calculations methods for analyzing nuclear reactors. These efforts have proven to be highly successful, and basically, today, we have reached maturity. It is now possible to model and analyze any nuclear system regardless of its complexity, to any degree of accuracy from the computational point of view. The uncertainties that we do have today in analyzing nuclear systems are due to uncertainties in the nuclear data and not in the computation method. The sophisticated and accurate methods that can be used to analyze nuclear systems are expensive to use and usually require large computers. Using such methods for all cases is sometimes like shooting a mosquito with a cannon. The science of reactor physics is the art of applying the suitable method for analyzing and performing the computations associated with the nuclear system in question. The description of the methods that are used in practice for analyzing nuclear reactors with the range of their applicability is the main purpose of this handbook. The fact that all these methods have reached, to a large extent, maturity calls for an up-to-date summary of all these methods. We believe that this handbook may be an answer to such a need.
