There are two ideas that have been promoted in English language teaching over recent years. One is that the language to be presented in the classroom should be as authentic as possible so as to represent the reality of native-speaker use. The other is that learners should be as autonomous as possible, and be allowed to make the language their own. The question that is raised in this article is whether these two ideas are complementary or contradictory.
