The authors, Drs. Chou, Helm and Kaplan bring to this task unique qualifications in cardiology, and especially in vectorcardiography. Drs. Chou and Helm have published widely in the field of vectorcardiography, and have studied specifically comparisons of various vectorcardiographic lead systems, the TsÉ loop of the vectorcardiogram, and the vectorcardiogram in certain varieties of congenital heart disease. They have done much experimental work on dipole theory.
Dr. Helm’s system of precordial lead placement has been widely recognized and applied. Both Drs. Chou and Helm are full Professors of Medicine in the University of Cincinnati College of Medicine. Dr. Kaplan has had extensive experience in heart disease of children spanning a period of several decades in his capacity as Professor of Pediatrics and Director of the Division of Cardiology at the Children’s Hospital in Cincinnati.
The previous edition of this textbook, CLINICAL VECTORCARDIOGRAPHY, has become widely known and has been well received. It has been among the most popular books on clinical vectorcardiography. The topic of vectorcardiography is especially timely in view of the recent increase in the application and usefulness of noninvasive methods of cardiac study, including vectorcardiography. This text can be recommended because of the clarity of the presentations and its practical approach, as exemplified by the excellence of the illustrations and the exercises in interpretation which are offered.
The revision of this popular text offers several important new features. These include a more specific statement of the vectorcardiographic criteria for the diagnosis of myocardial infarction; a study of the vectorcardiogram in ventricular hypertrophy; the application of the vectorcardiographic concept in hemiblock, and an extensive section on pediatric vectorcardiography written by Dr. Kaplan.
I predict that this new edition will be a welcome addition to this important area
of cardiology.
