The present work is carried out by the staff of the Russian Academy of Sciences in collaboration with colleagues from the Ocean Climate Laboratory of the National Oceanographic Data Center, NOAA, USA, within the framework of the NOAA Climate and Global Change Program and Program of the Fundamental Research of the Department of Earth Sciences of the Russian Academy of Sciences "Development of monitoring technology, ecosystem modeling and forecasting while studying natural resources under arid climate conditions.
The large amount of data in the atlas has been rescued thanks to the support of the UNESCO Intergovernmental Oceanographic Commission (IOC), Global Oceanographic Data Archeology and Rescue project and the IOC World Ocean Database Project.
The sources of historical data for the present paper were the NOAA Central Library, the Don State Public Library of the city of Rostov-on-Don, Scientific Library of the Southern Federal University, and Library of the North Caucasus Hydro-meteorological Centre of Russia. Our special gratitude is to the employees of these libraries – T.A. Sharapova, E.M. Kolesnikova, O.A. Men’shikh, and S.A. Bondarenko – for their help provided searches for the books on the Sea of Azov climate research history.
