Bruce Nolan (Jim Carrey) is a television field reporter for Eyewitness News on WKBW-TV in Buffalo, New York but desires to be the news anchorman. When he is passed over for the promotion in favour of his co-worker rival, Evan Baxter (Steve Carell), he becomes furious and rages during an interview at Niagara Falls, his resulting actions leading to his suspension from the station, followed by a series of misfortunes such as getting assaulted by a gang of thugs for standing up for a blind man they are beating up as he later on meets with them again and asks them to apologize for beating him up. Bruce complains to God that He's "the one that should be fired".
Bruce later receives a message in his newspager, directing him to a empty warehouse where God (Morgan Freeman) appears to him.
