Royal Armament Research and Development Establishment R.A.R.D.E. Memorandum 8/67, 1967. – 21 p.
This report gives details of the examination of pitted barrels and concludes that the major cause of pitting is corrosion of the bores by decomposition products of the bomb obturating rings. Provisional trials with Polycarbonate obturating rings are described. It is considered that the use of Polycarbonate rings will eliminate the prime source of bore corrosion, namely chloride contamination, and also may well reduce the incidence of other forms of secondary corrosion.
