The term Fungi Imperfecti could be broadly defined as including any and all anamorphic (asexual) expressions of true fungi that occur separately in time and/or space from their respective teleomorphs (sexual phases), or are not known to have a teleomorph. This interpretation embraces such phenomena as the sporangial forms of many Zygomycetes, several of the spore forms of the Uredinales, and the Mycelia Sterilia, which do not produce spores. These volumes exclude the Mycelia Sterilia. The conidial fungi, for the purposes of this work, are anamorphic fungi of presumed ascomycetous or basidiomycetous origin (the higher fungi or Dikaryomycota). Sporangial morphs of Zygomycetes, etc., are specifically excluded, though their ecology and biology, but not their phylogeny, closely parallel those of the dikaryomycotan anamorphs.
The editors tried to bring together in one place detailed considerations of many facets of conidial fungi—some of which have been almost entirely though undeservedly neglected in previous literature. They hope that these volumes will fill some lacunae in our knowledge of anamorphs, and serve as a useful reference to the advanced student who probably encounters many such fungi, but has tended to regard them simply as weeds or contaminants.
