This book is a lucid and up-to-date account of the physics of the atom and of the various forms of the quantum theory. It is intended mainly, but not solely, for Honours students. Advanced mathematical proofs of physical formulae are given in Appendices, leaving the main text of the book complete in its description of physical principles. This treatment also produces an easily readable work of reference for the scientist and research worker. This edition contains a new chapter entitled Quantum Theory of Solids. It contains sections on lattice vibration, Mössbauer Effect, metals and insulators, superconductivity, ferromagnetism and semiconductors. The text has been revised throughout and there are substantial changes in some of the chapters.
