London: Longman, 1859. — 110 p.
The following pages contain the Description of a series of Compositions from fresco-paintings, glasses, and sculptured sarcophagi, found in the Christian Cemeteries at Rome, arranged in order of subjects, so as to give a сompendious view of the contents of larger and more miscellaneous Collections from the same sources.
The Description is capable of being used alone as an Introduction to early Christian Symbolism; but it is designed and published for the two following ends: first, to invite subscriptions towards a reproduction by chromolithography of the Compositions described; and secondly, to serve as an accompaniment and explanation to the Compositions themselves when lithographed.
It is proposed that each subscriber shall inclose to the author his card, with the words, " Subscribes for [one or more copies] of the Catacomb Paintings," specifying also where, in London or elsewhere, and through what channel, he wishes the work to be delivered, the carriage being understood to be at the subscriber's own cost. All such communications are to be addressed to the Author, No. 6, Portland Place, W., London.
The Collection to be lithographed consists of fourteen Compositions, in three groups each, intended to cover twenty-nine coloured pages, 20 inches long by 13 broad each page. There are also three Appendices, which will cover at least three pages more, so that the whole may be thirty-two coloured pages of the dimensions stated, to be lithographed by M. Beau of Paris.
