This is an introductory undergraduate textbook that considers the importance of pharmaceutics and pharmaceutical dosage form design by considering the clinical use of modern drugs. Although a knowledge of pharmaceutics (physical chemistry applied to pharmaceuticals) is essential in the design and manufacture of modern pharmaceutical dosage forms, a knowledge of the interaction of dosage forms with the body (clinical pharmaceutics) is essential in the practising pharmacist. This textbook will thus describe a variety of dosage forms and their clinical importance and use. The use and behaviour of dosage forms in different age groups and patient groups will also be considered along with recent developments such as personalised therapies and genomics. All of the principles underpinning clinical pharmaceutics will be described using relevant examples from the recent literature and clinical case studies.
