This is one of rare technical books that is enjoyable to read. It provides a step-by-step introduction into device physics, technology, and manufacturing of active matrix liquid crystal displays - in an easy and reader-friendly manner. The author explains the basic device physics of LCDs, gives a historical perspective, provides typical geometrical and physical parameters values - so that the reader can get a "feel" of the problem (the order of magnitude of the parameters and quantities involved, why things are done in this or that way - both from scientific/physics perspective, and from the manufacturing and technological constraints viewpoint). There is a very good balance between rigorous scientific material, and empirical knowledge in this book. As a novice in LCD area (but having a strong device physics background) I had many specific questions on the structure, operation principle, and issues in LCDs - with most of these questions answered in the book. I can only wish that all the books on semiconductor device physics and technology would be that well written.
Congratulations, Dr. den Boer!
