Translation: Dominika Ciechanowicz. Foreword by Maria Kasprzycka.
It has been over 400 years since Wulfstan the sailor’s account of his journey to Truso in the late 9th century was discovered. Over this time the place has taken on the proportions of a legendary town, comparable to Troy or Atlantis. Today, thanks to the discovery and long research work of Marek Jagodziński, PhD, Truso is one of the archaeologically recognized Early Medieval crafts and trade centres in the basin of the Baltic Sea. Thus, trying to meet the growing demand for information about economic centres of the Viking Age in Europe, the Museum has decided to prepare an exhibition presenting a wide range of aspects of the trading-post’s functioning. Emphasizing the role that this type of centres played in social, economic and cultural development of the Early Medieval communities, we are trying to present the exceptionally interesting and inspiring history of Central Europe in the Viking Age in a new way.
