The main purpose of the book is to teach students to observe, analyse and interpret language phenomena.
The book consists of 10 units (seminars) and 10 appendices. It contains plans of seminars and exercises on the following problems: etymological characteristics of Modem English vocabulary, different ways of word-formation, semasiology (which includes the study of meaning and the shift of meaning, transfer of meaning, polysemy and homonymy and semantic groups of words), historical background of the Modem English vocabulary and stylistic layers of vocabulary in Modem English.
To facilitate the students’ independent work reference material has been appended. The appendices include the most common adjective- forming suffixes denoting nationalities, the names of most frequent phobias, a list of onomatopoeic words denoting animals’ cries, a glossary of common blends, most common hyponic systems of a closed type, a list of archaisms used in legal documents, a glossary of proper names used metaphorically or metonymically, a list of most frequent paronyms, and, finally, a selection of collective norms denoting a group of people, animals, things etc.
