[Innsbrucker Beiträge zur Sprachwissenschaft, Band 51] Innsbruck, 1986 — 329 S.
This is the thesis of a pupil of Helmut Rix. M. follows Rix at many points but has a great deal of originality and importance to say himself in this major contribution to the study of the languages of ancient Italy. The title understates: the book provides far more than a history of Umbrian (U) phonology. Of course, U is the only language treated systematically and its sound system is the focussing theme. But their wider contexts are never far from M.’s attention.
