Native American societies have a specific indigenous concept about the rights and obligations of an individual in regard to the community. Tequio is one of the main instruments of social solidarity within traditional corporate groups and we hypothesize that it can be useful to understand the cultural framework of these rights and duties. We begin with a brief conceptual discussion to proceed with an analysis of the historical development of the tequio institution in several regions.
