Código JEL = N86 Palabras clave: Economía Colonial, Herencia, Biografía, Informalidad Abstract This paper deals about a merchant who became rich in Potosí, during XVIIth century, when, according the historiography usual idea, its formal economy was in decadence. This analysis is supported mainly by figures from time series and institutional data. In our opinion, there was a dual structure of the colonial economy — formal/underground—, whose development center was located at Potosi; this dual behavior was allowed by the interstices of the legal system.
