The glossary provides a listing of over 12,000 entries, with the approved names of minerals indicated in bold-face type. A name used to designate a group of species, hypothetical mineral (synthetic, anthropogenic, etc.), intermediate member of a solid-solution series (e.g. oligoclase, a member of the albite-anorthite series), names of minerals published without approval by the International Mineralogical Association (IMA), and questionable minerals- are listed in plain face. Varieties, synonyms and discredited minerals are in italic type. For each mineral, there is given its etymology, chemical formula, crystal system and references.
This glossary is intended for mineralogists, geochemists, geologists, p rivate collectors, museum curators, researchers, and those in the gem trade, and is designed to provide a tool for quick reference.
