The purpose of this book is to present to the reader a complete reference on the theory and applications of a new family of transforms, called lapped transforms (LTs). These transforms can be used in many applications, such as filtering, coding, spectral estimation, and any others where a traditional block transform is employed, such as the discrete Fourier transform (DFT) or the discrete cosine transform (DCT). In many cases, LTs will lead to a better complexity versus performance trade-off than other transforms. Until now, the theory of lapped transforms and many of their applications have appeared in theses, journal articles, and conference proceedings. This is the first book in which all of the known results are put together in an organized form.
