First published in 1934. This book is in many respects a mere preliminary survey of a vast field which still awaits detailed investigation. It is to be hoped, therefore, that future studies on the 'lygisögur' will speedily supplement it and eventually supersede it entirely. The sooner this happens, the better the author will be pleased; for the book was written partly to call the attention of students in Germanic and Romance philology to the existence of new worlds to conquer.
