This is the current version of lecture notes for the Utrecht third-year astronomy course on stellar atmospheres. The main topic treated in this 30-hour course is the classical theory of radiative transfer for explaining stellar spectra. The reason to emphasize this topic over the many newer subjects of astrophysical interest o_ered by stellar atmospheres is that it needs relatively much attention to be mastered. Radiative transfer in gaseous media that are neither optically thin nor completely opaque is a key part of astrophysics, but it is not a transparent subject.
