This is the third of a set of four volumes translated from the Russian and it comprises a collection of problems in optics for use in conjunction with university courses in physics. Where appropriate, answers and solutions to the problems are given in the second part of the book, and this is the case in each volume of the set. Numerous additional problems have been included during the translation, and many of these are on topics which have developed in recent years, such as lasers, the Mossbauer effect and super-conductivity. These three examples are in fact dealt with in Volume 4. The collection of problems has been successfully used at Moscow University and is equivalent to a course in physics at a British or at an American University, with certain of the problems appropriate to an Honours course. It can be used consecutively with almost any textbook on physics at the equivalent level and will prove an important aid to students of physics in Western Universities. Subjects covered in the other three volumes are: I Mechanics; II Electricity and Magnetism; IV Molecular Physics, Thermodynamics, Atomic and Nuclear Physics.
