In 1980, he met Jim Green and joined the Fenwick team. Al mentored under Jim Green in both rod and line design. In 1989, Al joined Sage rods and shortly after, teamed up with Scientific Anglers. In 1994, with Bruce Richards of Scientific Anglers, Al designed the Mastery Spey/Salmon Taper and later the Short Head and Mid Head spey lines.
