This book, based on more than 40 years of teaching courses on Mass Transfer Processes intends to fill this gap starting from the basic equation of ternary distillation published by Hausen in 1935 and by fully exploiting the remarkable properties of this equation covering all modes of distillation.
The first three chapters describe the modes of distillation and develop the basic equations governing the distillation process. Chapter 4 is the central chapter of the book discussing in detail the binary up to multicomponent distillation of ideal mixtures. Chapter 5 proves that the results of Chapter 4 based on ideal mixtures are valid qualitatively also for real mixtures including mixtures with azeotropes.
Special attention has been given to interpret the coefficients and parameters of the theory in relation to the physical phenomena of the distillation process. Numerous figures and examples serve to illustrate the analytical relationships. The book is intended as a graduate or postgraduate textbook for an advanced course on distillation but will also help the practicing engineer to better understand the complex interrelationships of multicomponent distillation.
